He wanted to tell them three major stories from his life. “No big deal. Just three stories.”

The creator of Apple, Steve Jobs, said this in May 2005 when he spoke to the graduating class of Stanford University at their Commencement Ceremony.

“Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life.” Jobs told the graduating class three personal, life stories about “connecting the dots,” “love and loss,” and “death.”

His “unwed college graduate student” mother put up Steve Jobs for adoption. Despite her requests the couple that adopted him had not graduated college, and in his father’s case high school. Steve’s parents assured his biological mother that he would attend college someday, and this was true.

Jobs attended Reed College for six months before deciding that he “didn’t see the value” in spending extreme amounts of money on education. Once he dropped out, for about 18 months he “dropped-in” on classes that interested him. He didn’t have a dorm room, so Jobs spent nights sleeping on the floor of friend’s dorm rooms and “collected coke bottles for 5 cent deposits” to purchase food.

Although dropping out caused hardships for him, Jobs said it was, “one of the best decisions I’ve ever made.” His dropping in on classes turned out to be crucial and “priceless later on” in Job’s life. Being interested in calligraphy, Jobs took a calligraphy class, which at the time seemed to have “no practical application” in his life. This was the case until ten years later when he was creating the Mac and remembered what he had learned in that calligraphy class.

The Mac was the first computer with “beautiful typography.” If Jobs hadn’t dropped in that calligraphy class, then the Mac would have never acquired this. And since, according to Jobs, “Windows copied the Mac,” then no computer would have this sophisticated typography. “You can’t connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backwards.”

By the age of twenty, Jobs and his business partner Woz were running Apple out of parent’s garage. Ten years later Apple was a ten billion dollar company with 4,000 employees. The year after Macintosh was released Jobs was “very publicly” fired after having a “falling out” with his business partner and the board of directors.

“I still loved what I did,” Jobs said when he spoke of how he felt after being fired from Apple. He “started over” and within the next five years he created NeXT, Pixar and met his future wife Laurene. “It was an awful tasting medicine, but I guess the patient needed it.”

Pixar created the world’s first computer generated movie, Toy Story and Apple decided to purchase NeXT, causing Jobs to return to Apple. “Getting fired from Apple was the best thing that could have ever happened to me.” When speaking of finding what you love Jobs said, “If you still haven’t found it yet, keep looking. Don’t settle.”

The philosophy in which Steve Jobs lived his life was relative to a quote he read when he was 17, “If you live each day as if it was your last, someday you’ll most certainly be right.” This quote reminded him that one day he would soon be dead and was significant in helping him make decisions throughout his lifetime.

In 2004 Jobs had been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. “I didn’t even know what a pancreases was.” His doctor told him that the cancer would likely be incurable and to get his “affairs in order” since he was to live no longer than three to six months. “This meant say your goodbyes.”

Later the same day that his cancer was detected, he had a biopsy done. The doctors “started crying” after the results were determined, because they discovered that Jobs had a rare form of pancreatic cancer that was curable with surgery. “I had the surgery and I’m fine now.”

Death is a journey’s end that all humans share since “no one has ever escaped death.” Because no one has an unlimited amount of time in life, Jobs urged the graduating class to “don’t waste it on someone else’s life,” and to, “Have the courage to follow your heart and intuition.”

Jobs spoke of an “amazing publication” by Stewart Brand called The Whole Earth Catalog, which he referred to as a “bible of my generation.” Jobs suggested that the publication was a “Google in paperback form.” On the final issue of The Whole Earth Catalog were the words: “Stay Hungry. Stay Foolish.” Jobs said he has always hoped for that for himself and he wished the same for the college graduates.

“Stay Hungry. Stay Foolish.”

College admissions offices practice what is known as affirmative action, often leading to “unfair” admissions of students, such as children of alumni, college athletes and children from a low-income background.

This is the argument made by Regina Smith, an African American college student, and full time Federal government employee. Smith spoke in an honors communication course at Prince George’s Community College on the issue of preferences that are looked at in higher education admissions offices.

“Now that seems unfair.” Throughout her presentation, Smith addressed specific preferences that give students “an unfair opportunity of a college education.” These preferences include legacy admissions, college athletic acceptance standards, and special help given to students with socioeconomic issues.

If a college applicant has a family member that graduated from the same institution that he or she is applying to, they obtain admission for being a legacy. Legacy admissions, the most traditional preference used in college admissions, can award an “edge to applicants who are clearly less qualified.”

According to Smith, some universities, such as the University of Pennsylvania, have admission offices that “lobby” specifically for children of alumni. A student could have a grade point average of 2.0 and a family legacy could allow them to be rewarded admission over a student with a 3.5 grade point average.

This leads to the majority of students to be legacies, as in the case of Notre Dame University’s student body that consists fifty seven percent of legacies. Smith makes an argument during her presentation that, “Even President Bush was a legacy admission to a high school, college and even the White House.”

Generally, most student athletes have been “held to a lower standard” than those non-athletic students. Even after improvements had been made to the NCAA academic requirements, athletes’ GPAs and SAT scores can be considerably lower than average student’s can. “Is it fair when you have to earn a much higher GPA and SAT score than an athlete?”

Despite the additional academic support that the college athletes get, their average graduation rate is “dismal.” Smith reported that with nearly 3,700 athletes in the NCAA “roughly half get a college degree.” Even so, athletes still receive preferences in admissions over students who are more academically qualified. “That seems unfair.”

There are exemptions to these preferences given to athletes, such as the case at Duke University. They admit students who are “academically prepared,” and it reflects in their ninety percent graduation rate for athletes accepting scholarship. “This demonstrates that students can win championships and have academic success without preferences.”

Athletic preferences stem from “money.” Smith said, “The NCAA signed an eleven-year, $6 billion television contract with $187 million distrusted to 320 Division 1 schools. This money makes it easy for colleges to pick the physically talented athlete over the scholastically eligible student. “That seems unfair.”

Often, “special preferences” are given to students with a “socioeconomic disadvantage.” Smith used the University of California system as a example, because they factor in “economic status and challenging life circumstances” when accepting students.

The students who are often isolated from these preferences are those that are children of blue-collar and middle-income families. Even though these families work, they usually cannot afford enough to pay for “tuition, room and board.” These students being unable to receive the same preferences are “unfair.”

Smith’s fundamental goal of her presentation is to question why affirmative action often is singled out, and the other preferences are seldom considered. Ron Wilson, a representative of Texas, convinced Texas legislation to pass a law all schools in Texas to require a consistent minimum GPA for all college applicants, athlete or not.

In closing her presentation, Smith made her final point that no preferences at all should be considered in the admissions process of higher education. “Let’s be fair.”

A Statesville man was given 25 years prison time and lifetime probation on Friday for the manufacture of pornographic material and distributing it on the Internet, as well as two counts of child molestation.

David Lloyd King, 34, of Kings Road was sentenced after he plead guilty in July 2009 for producing, transporting and possessing child pornography.

According to the City Attorney’s office, King began collecting child pornography in 1999 and began to produce and trade it around the world via internet in 2000.

Police sources say that King was discovered after Yahoo reported that someone was uploading child pornography to a Yahoo photo account and the account was traced back to him.

King has been in police custody since his arrest in 2008.

A former Winthrop University print shop employee was arrested and charged with two counts of breach of trust for using an unauthorized University credit card, after it was discovered that he charged over $200,000 dollars to it over a three year period.

George Robert Walker, 62, of Rock Hill S.C., was charged with two counts of breach of trust over $5,000.

The price increase for printing services for university departments led the university to conduct a special audit of the printing services department. According to police, the audit revealed that someone was “defrauding the university and receiving payment from a Winthrop credit card using PayPal”.

Walker charged $209,370 on the university’s credit card between August 15, 2007 and August 15, 2010.

After his arrest, Walker was released on a personal bond of $150,000.
